XTO, whose focus is U.S.-based, estimates that its newest acquisitions are 90% natural gas and 50% proved developed and will add about 30 MMcfe/d to the company’s production base. Natural gas production in 2004 now targets an increase of 16% to 18%, up from the previous guidance of 13% to 15%. Most of the latest acquisitions are scheduled to close on or before Jan. 30.

California’s Gov. Gray Davis re-appointed the newest commissioner on the state energy commission, John Geesman, 51, to a full five-year term. Geesman had been appointed last July to fill out a term of a commissioner who retired early.

Ziff Reports Gas, Oil Operating Costs Up in Western Canada

Operating costs continue to rise in the oil and natural gas fields of Western Canada, according to the newest annual study by Calgary-based Ziff Energy Group. In a study of 2001 costs of 195 operating fields, Ziff determined that oil costs had increased 9% over those in 2000, while gas costs jumped 18% from the year before.

CPUC Takes Long-Delayed Direct Access Action; New Majority Evident

The California Public Utility Commission’s (CPUC) newest member and fourth Democratic appointee, Michael Peevey, joined in a new coalition majority Thursday on a narrow (3-2), politically charged vote to make the CPUC’s earlier suspension of retail direct access effective on the date of the original decision, Sept. 20. The vote derails the CPUC president’s desire to make the suspension retroactive to July 1 and may have implications for future issues facing the regulators.
