Report Finds Competition Alive And Well In NY

Competition is, for the most part, flourishing in New York’s electricity markets, but significant levels of new generation will need to be added to the state’s system in the near future in order for New Yorkers to avoid incurring higher electricity prices, according to a report recently issued by Dr. David Patton, market adviser to the New York independent system operator (NYISO).

Third Western Canada Pipeline Expansion Proposed

Where’s that scorecard? It’s never around when you need it. By our count there are now three new proposals on the Canadian side to upgrade service through southern British Columbia and into the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Westcoast Energy entered the Northwest expansion lists last week with an announcement of an open season to run through the end of May for more capacity on its Southern Mainline and Westcoast Alberta line to accommodate additional volumes from supply areas in British Columbia, Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

Falcon to Turn Hill-Lake into High-Deliverability Storage

Recognizing the need for more high-deliverability storage to support the rapid growth of gas-fired power generation in Texas, Falcon Gas Storage acquired a second storage facility in the state, with plans to increase cycling capabilities and connect the facility to the main Texas pipeline grid. The Hill-Lake natural gas storage facility is located about 100 miles west of Dallas/Fort Worth in Eastland County. Falcon purchased rights to the plant from TXU Lone Star Pipeline.

Enron Plans Bahamas LNG Facility, Pipeline to FL

With the understanding that it’s no secret the state of Floridais in dire need of new natural gas-fired electric generatingfacilities and increased gas supply to support them in the nearfuture, Enron last week disclosed plans to construct an estimated$300 million liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal and facility inthe Bahamas and a 90-mile gas pipeline from the facilities to thecoast of Florida, said Habiba Bayi, a spokeswoman for the company.
