Nevada’s Consumer Advocate, Regulators Clash Over Southwest Gas Rate Hike

Nevada’s state consumer advocate has filed a motion with the Nevada Public Utilities Commission urging regulators to reject the commission staff’s latest recommendation to almost double the rate increase requested by Las Vegas-based Southwest Gas Corp. The utility originally asked for a $16.3 million rate increase last June, but the PUC staff increased that total to $30.6 million.

NIPSCO Requests Clarification on Refund Order, New Storage Requirements

NiSource subsidiary Northern Indiana Public Service (NIPSCO) filed a motion for clarification of an order issued by Indiana regulators in September that will require the utility to refund gas customers $3.8 million and make significant modifications to its use and valuation of gas storage, and its hedging and gas volatility mitigation measures. However, the company decided late on Friday not to appeal the order, said NIPSCO spokesman Larry Graham.

It was the first time Indiana regulators had ordered a refund based on NIPSCO’s purchased gas adjustment (PGA) mechanism.

El Paso Moves to Quash Subpoena for Deceptive Price Reporting Records

In an emergency motion filed at FERC this week, El Paso Corp. is seeking to quash a subpoena issued by an agency judge that requires it to turn over documentary evidence related to its self-avowed practice of submitting false prices for natural gas trades to an energy publication.
