Fracking Bills Get Cold Shoulder in California

All but one of the proposals to address hydraulic fracturing (fracking), including all of those seeking moratoriums on the well stimulation practice, have bitten the dust in the California legislature. The lone bill standing (SB 4) is still awaiting committee referral in the lower house Assembly (see Shale Daily, June 3).

Texas Town Extends Drilling Permit Moratorium

The Town Council of Flower Mound, TX, which sits atop the Barnett Shale, has combined two existed drilling permit moratoriums into one and extended it until April 15 while it awaits an advisory board’s report on oil and natural gas development activities in the town.

Salazar Defends Ban on Deepwater; Issues New Rules

As complaints and protests grew last week against the Gulf of Mexico moratoriums, both the six month ban on deepwater drilling and the indefinite suspension of drilling in shallow water, the Department of Interior backed off somewhat on the shallow water ban, issuing a directive for Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) activities implementing stronger safety requirements, and saying shallow-water drilling that is in compliance with the new requirements could continue.

Kerry Supports Alaska Pipeline, Drilling Moratoriums, and LNG (with Reservations)

If elected president, U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-MA, would make a natural gas pipeline from Alaska a priority, but would limit lower 48 gas development on federal lands and offshore to areas that are currently open.
