Michigan Attorney General Continues to Battle Against Utility Rate Increases

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox went after state gas utility Consumers Energy again on Thursday for a proposed interim rate increase that would further boost utility customer bills in January. Consumers Energy recently won state regulatory approval to raise the gas commodity rates of its average residential customers by 38% this winter.

Michigan Attorney General Blasts Regulators for Approving Utility Gas Cost Hikes

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox lambasted state regulators Thursday for approving substantial increases in Consumers Energy and Aquila’s utility gas cost recovery mechanisms for the winter heating season. Heating bills this winter for Consumers Energy and Aquila residential ratepayers will rise 38% and 47%, respectively.

Michigan Consolidated, SEMCO Agree to Limit Winter Gas Cost Increases

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox said Friday that he reached a settlement agreement with SEMCO Energy and Michigan Consolidated Gas (MichCon) to cut gas cost increases for 1.5 million natural gas customers by 75%. Cox said he continues to challenge Consumers Energy and Aquila’s proposed monthly increases of $42 to $56.60 on customers’ winter heating bills.

Michigan Consolidated, SEMCO Agree to Delay Collecting Winter Gas Cost Increases

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox said Friday that he reached a settlement agreement with SEMCO Energy and Michigan Consolidated Gas (MichCon) essentially delaying and spreading out gas cost increases over succeeding months for 1.5 million natural gas customers. Cox said it would cut customers winter bills by 75%. He continues to challenge Consumers Energy and Aquila’s proposed monthly increases of $42 to $56.60 on customers’ winter heating bills.

Michigan Attorney General Wants Utilities to Delay Winter Gas Cost Increases

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox filed testimony on Monday in the gas cost recovery (GCR) cases of Michigan’s four major gas utilities, challenging the gas cost increases proposed for this winter. Cox told the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) that Consumers Energy, Michigan Consolidated Gas, Aquila and Semco Energy should delay their commodity cost increases until after the winter heating season and spread them over 12 months rather than only four.

Direct Energy Offers Chunk of Retail Market for Piece of LNG Value Chain

Centrica is dangling a big carrot in front of liquefied natural gas (LNG) suppliers: its top market position in the U.S. and UK retail energy markets. Mike Hogan, senior vice president of upstream gas and power for Centrica subsidiary Direct Energy, said the company is actively seeking substantial new gas and power supply arrangements, including a stake in the LNG business, because of its rapid retail demand growth.

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox has objected to the way the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) last week quickly allowed Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. to pass through a large rate hike in gas cost recovery portion of its bills to customers. Cox said the MPSC broke the rules by not allowing concerned parties to comment before the ruling was made.
