NTSB Urges More Oversight by Regulators, Industry

While there were multiple messages in the exhaustive report issued last week by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) about last year’s San Bruno, CA, natural gas pipeline rupture and explosion, one thing rang out loudest from the five-member panel: tougher natural gas pipeline regulation is needed at both the state and federal levels (see related story).

Associated Industries of Florida (AIF) has requested that the inspector general of the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) investigate what AIF said are thousands of messages about official PSC business sent and received on Commissioner Nancy Argenziano’s private Blackberry.

SoCalGas Sees 15-20% Lower Winter Bills; Urges Conservation

Although the messages may be economically mixed, Sempra Energy’s Southern California Ga Co. utility unit Wednesday predicted lower natural gas bills this winter, but it nevertheless urged its business customers to continue to seek various energy savings through a number of recommended programs. Mirroring a message by its utility counterpart in the northern half of the state, SoCalGas said businesses throughout California should see lower gas bills the upcoming winter.

Local LNG Flak for CA Governor; Radio Address Urges Conservation

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger kept pushing energy-saving messages for this summer in his weekly statewide radio address last weekend, but other news media picked up belatedly on the governor’s comments about liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal siting in the state that he made in response to media questions last Thursday (see Daily GPI, June 24). The governor’s press office stressed that Schwarzenegger is waiting for the regulatory processes to be completed regarding both proposed onshore and offshore LNG terminals.
