Texas Town’s Drilling Supporters Fall Short of Petition Goal

Citizens for Property Rights (CPR), a five-member group that opposes what members believe are too-strict restrictions on gas drilling imposed by the city of Southlake, TX, failed to get enough signatures on a petition to relax some of the rules. Gains Proliferate into Nearly All of Market

The market was marginally firmer Wednesday as a significantly greater number of points were seeing small increases than a day before. The rationale for the modest rise in bullishness was elusive, as cooling demand was receding to some extent in the Midcontinent and parts of the South while mostly moderate conditions still dominated the rest of the weather picture. Also, Tuesday’s flat July futures provided no support for cash numbers Wednesday.

Modest Rise in Heating Load Boosts Most Points

The market was marginally stronger Tuesday as forecasts of Midwestern lows not far above freezing joined sub-freezing predictions for the Rockies and much of Western Canada in creating extra heating load. Most Points See Modest Gains; TS Debby in Works?

Several flat to marginally lower prices (mostly in the West) again prevented the cash market from making it a clean sweep of increases Tuesday. Otherwise, lingering heat, although not anywhere near as bad as in late July and early August, allowed prices to ignore a dime drop in futures the day before and record gains of anywhere from 2-3 cents to nearly 45 cents.

All Points See Gains; Start-Up Snag at Opal

Power generation demand was rising only marginally as conditions remain rather mild across Canada and most of the northern half of the U.S. However, the cash market used prior-day screen support, expectations of a very low storage injection in the previous week (and quite possibly another unusual midsummer pull), and the quite strong cooling load being experienced throughout the southern U.S. to record sizeable gains across the board Wednesday.
