Maryland Senators Back Measure to Repeal FERC LNG Siting Authority

Maryland Sens. Barbara A. Mikulski and Benjamin L. Cardin, both outspoken critics of AES Corp.’s Sparrows Point liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal proposed for Baltimore County, MD, said Tuesday they support legislation to repeal a provision in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 that gives FERC exclusive authority over the siting of onshore LNG terminals.

American businesses-from financial institutions andsophisticated manufacturing plants to established farms-areincreasingly interested generating their own electricity onlocation, according to a national survey. Some of these businessesplan to upgrade currently installed back-up generation equipmentwithin the next 12 months, according to the study. These companies,together with businesses seeking increased control of operations,lower costs, or fewer power disruptions, add up to a viablestart-up market for on-site power plants, the survey said.

Packaged Ice Inc. plans to outsource energy management of 60U.S. ice manufacturing facilities to Enron Energy Services (EES).Enron will evaluate and implement capital projects related toPackaged Ice’s “private utility” to increase productivity andefficiency of the plants. For a change there was nogeographic pattern in the market as the price gains tended to bescattered across all regions.
