Flat (Yes, Again) Market Asks: What Storage Report?

The cash market shrugged off what many considered a bearishstorage withdrawal report and maintained what has become February’sstatus quo Thursday: flat pricing with mostly tight ranges. Sourceswere dismayed to admit their general expectation Wednesdayafternoon of falling prices Thursday was off the mark. “Nothingseems to be moving this market in any direction,” a marketer in theWest said.

Lower Weekend Demand Softens West; East Flat

Eastern markets maintained the week’s general pattern of flatpricing Friday, even eking out small increases here and there. TheWest tended to be a little softer due to the usual weekend fall-offin demand, but the declines there were fairly minuscule at no morethan 1-4 cents down in nearly every case.

April Prices Continue to Soften for Weekend

Late-April prices maintained their weakening ways Friday,although most of the declines were not as steep as on “BlackThursday,” as one producer called it. The largest drops tended tobe concentrated at Western points, especially with Malin andPG&E citygates falling at double-digit rates again. Theirsoftness was exacerbated by PG&E’s Stage 2 OFO that becameeffective Saturday. The OFO, prompted by high system linepack,carried penalties of $5/dth for any deliveries exceeding 110% of acustomer’s nominated volumes.
