New Dives Ignite Worries of Sub-$1 Weekend Gas

It didn’t take long to eclipse what had been the lowest-everprices for a December date recorded by Daily GPI, and the new lowmarks weren’t even close to the ones seen earlier in the week.Continuing record warmth in the eastern two-thirds of the nationyielded record low gas prices for this time of year. Gulf Coastnumbers were almost a dollar under December indexes only three daysinto the month.

OK Production Dips to 20-Year Low

Statistics recently released by the Oklahoma CorporationCommission (OCC) show gas production in the state last year reachedits lowest level since 1968. However, OCC Commissioner Bob Anthonysaid he sees no cause for alarm and expects little or no furthererosion in production this year forward.

Canadian Imports Slow; LNG Soars

Despite reaching another record of 2,899 Bcf, Canadian gasimports grew by only 0.5%, or 15.4 Bcf, last year, which was thelowest growth level in the past 11 years, according to a report bythe Department of Energy. DOE attributed the slow-down to tightimport pipeline capacity. It also mentioned prices at gas importpoints (under long-term and short-term contracts) in 1997 averaged$2.11, 10% higher than average prices in 1996. The average price ofCanadian gas at major import points rose 46% over the past twoyears, DOE said.
