NUI Corp., parent company of six eastern gas local distributioncompanies, announced a restructuring plan designed to streamlinethe company in preparation for a more competitive marketplace. Theplan includes greater emphasis on nonregulated business operationsand a voluntary early retirement program offered to 88 of its 1,161employees, including four members of NUI’s executive managementteam, among them Lyle Motley, president of the company’s southerndivision. Further downsizing is expected once the companydetermines where it can achieve greater efficiencies in its effortto generate higher revenues from its nonregulated businesses.

More than 70% of gas consumed could be bought from suppliersother than local distribution companies under current and proposedLDC transportation programs, according to the American GasAssociation (AGA). But the choice option still is heavily weightedtoward large customers.

Spurred by deregulation and the changing role of localdistribution companies, KeySpan Energy, parent of Brooklyn UnionGas, and Enron Capital & Trade Resources (ECT) made an allianceto market gas supply management services to LDCs throughout theNortheast.

While some local gas utilities will continue struggling toinsulate their small customers from high gas prices and pricevolatility, NIPSCO announced yesterday it will begin offeringselect residential customers and all of its non-residential buyersan option of fixing or capping their commodity prices for up to oneyear starting in May. The program was approved last October as partof NIPSCO’s Alternative Regulatory Plan.
