Carolina Power and Light (CP&L) scaled back its plans toserve the budding electricity load in North Carolina yesterday byannouncing the replacement of its $175 million interstate PalmettoPipeline proposal with a $100 million 82-mile intrastate pipelineproject. The integrated energy company plans to build the new pipebetween Iredell and Richmond counties to serve an electric powerplant soon to be under construction. If CP&L gets its way, thenew pipe will be in service by the spring of 2001.

Buoyed by a much firmer screen and the pickup in load thatfollows a long Labor Day weekend, cash prices rose Tuesday by anickel or more at almost every point, with most of the increasesexceeding a dime. Not only did natural gas futures rise more than adime, but the crude oil futures contract for October also flexedits muscle with a jump of slightly over 60 cents, placing it wellabove $22/bbl, a marketer pointed out.

Gas buyers could have been forgiven Monday for modifying apopular movie’s catchphrase and screaming, “Show me the weather!” Autility buyer reporting “beautiful” conditions outdoors in theNortheast said it seemed odd that prices could continue to rise inthe face of moderate weather in most major market areas outside theSouth. Cash quotes ranged from flat to barely higher at Northeastcitygates to as much as 15 cents up at the PG&E citygate. Mostgains tended to be on either side of a nickel.

After Monday’s almost universal double-digit increases, cashprices were on auto-pilot Tuesday, as they trended down from theprevious day’s results. Many traders said Monday’s run-up would bethis week’s high, pointing to moderating weather and the thecompletion of pipeline maintenance projects.

Encouraged by another skyrocketing screen, growing airconditioning load and a major supply outage in the Rockies, cashprices were on the rise Friday almost across the board by anywherefrom 2 to 18 cents. Most upticks were in the neighborhood of anickel, but all Rockies pipes were seeing double-digit increases.”I think a lot of people are starting to put their bull horns backon,” commented a Texas source.

Heavy air conditioning load and a tightening of supplyavailability not only generated a late rebound in bidweek pricesFriday but also pushed up last-of-May and early June aftermarketnumbers in nearly all Eastern, Gulf Coast and Midcontinent/Midwestmarkets. Waha and Permian Basin gas, supported by Texas andMidcontinent cooling demand, also was rising above index levels.But in the generally cool West, weekend and 1st-of-month swingprices tended to go down by a few cents.
