Court Decision on Long Beach LNG Plans Still Months Away
A resolution of the pending litigation by proponents of a Long Beach, CA, liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal is still months away, the city attorney told NGI Wednesday. More imminent would be further legal action once the City of Long Beach, as expected, rejects a claim by LNG developer Sound Energy Solutions (SES), which is seeking payment for costs incurred in the three-year permitting process that came to a halt in January.
Barclays Agrees to $144M Settlement with Enron
Enron Corp. on Friday announced it had reached a $144 million settlement with Barclays in its so-called “MegaClaims” litigation. Enron’s settlements with eight financial institutions now total $928 million.
Sempra Utilities, SoCal Edison Settle Gas Dispute Cases
In an offshoot of the court-approved class action litigation settlement over Sempra Energy’s utilities’ alleged driving up of wholesale natural gas prices in the midst of the 2000-2001 energy crisis, the utilities and neighboring Southern California Edison Co. have reached a settlement that calls for changes in the way the Sempra gas storage program is operated. The three utilities jointly filed a motion with the California Public Utilities Commission last Monday to stay a regulatory case examining storage operations.

Settlement Will Lead to Extensive Changes in Sempra Gas Utility Operations
In addition to the cash and financial consequences, substantial natural gas utility changes are coming at Sempra Energy’s two California utilities as a result of the massive litigation settlement announced earlier this month. Within six months of the settlement being made final, new, consolidated approaches to intrastate transmission/storage, natural gas buying and a clearer separation of gas operations and gas buying will be put in effect at the Sempra utilities, according to the company’s filing with Securities and Exchange Commission last Thursday.

In what the regulators consider a prudent way of eliminating long, costly litigation, Las Vegas, NV-based Southwest Gas Corp. Friday reached agreement with the Arizona Corporation Commission’s (ACC’s) pipeline safety division in the aftermath of Feb. 2 residential natural gas explosion that damaged part of a home, but spared the residents. An ACC spokesperson announced the agreement.
