Unocal Canada Limited received approval from the BritishColumbia Ministry of Energy and Mines to increase the maximumstorage capacity of the Aitken Creek gas storage reservoir. Approval allows Unocal Canada to initially increase working gascapacity at Aitken by 20% to 48 Bcf as early as the second quarter. Ultimately, working gas capacity could increase to 80 Bcf, doublethe current capacity.

DukeSolutions, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, has acquiredprivately held Engineering Interface Limited of Toronto and itsmain subsidiary Tescor Energy Services, Inc. The new company willbecome the Canadian operations for DukeSolutions. Terms of theacquisition were not disclosed.

TransCanada Recapitalizing Gathering

TransCanada PipeLines created limited partnership TransCanadaGas Processing LP and is offering units to the public. TransCanadaholds various ownership interests in five gathering and processingfacilities and all related agreements in Alberta and Saskatchewan.With offering proceeds, the partnership will acquire an indirect75% interest in the facilities, while TransCanada will retain theremaining 25%. After 20 years, TransCanada will reacquire thefacilities at their fair market value for cash or shares ofTransCanada. “TransCanada will recapitalize these Canadian gasprocessing investments in a very efficient manner and investorswill receive attractive returns and tax treatment,” saidTransCanada CEO George Watson.

Producers Alarmed at AGL’s Waiver Plea

Atlanta Gas Light’s plea for limited waivers of FERC’scapacity-release regulations and other rules has drawn a howl ofprotests from producers. The Georgia-based LDC is seeking thewaivers to “facilitate” its application to unbundle itsdistribution services, which currently is pending before thestate’s Public Service Commission.

Sonat Energy Services purchased a 50-percent limited partnershipinterest in GPU International’s Mid-Georgia Cogen L.P. power plant.”Our experience in both natural gas and power marketing has shownus that investing in state-of-the-art natural gas-fired electricpower generation is a key ingredient to providing our customerswith the services they need in today’s competitive market,” saidSonat Energy Service s President Richard Bates. The 300 MWcogeneration power plant is a dispatchable natural gas-fired,combined cycle facility located in Kathleen, GA. It is scheduled toenter commercial operation in the second quarter of 1998. Inaddition to providing thermal energy to a Frito-Lay snack foodprocessing plant and electrical capacity to Georgia Power, thefacility also will be available to sell wholesale energy to avariety of customers. Mid-Georgia Cogen is the first independentpower project developed in Georgia.
