Lackluster

Those bemoaning the lackluster performance of integrated gas andutility stocks can blame their woes, at least in part, on theInternet and the technology revolution, according to one analyst.Prudential Securities’ Carol Coale said investors have beenshifting their attention, and their dollars, from the “old economy”to a new one. “Whether it’s Internet or high-tech, we’re seeing amajor sector shift,” she told Daily GPI. Also to blame, Coale saidin a Prudential research note, is bearish gas market sentiment.

If the results of last week’s Gulf of Mexico lease sale are any indication, the federal government is now feeling the effects of weak commodity prices and industry consolidation.

Both El Paso Energy and Coastal Corp. wracked up record earningsfor the first quarter, while The Williams Cos. gave a lacklusterperformance – with most of its major business groups posting lowerresults compared to a year ago.

After gapping lower at the open for the second day in a row,natural gas futures continued to free-fall in lackluster holidaytrading Monday. Weak cash market pricing and a quicklydeteriorating technical picture were cited as reasons for the10.2-cent decline in the November contract. By settling at $2.089,November has dropped over 30 cents in the last three tradingsessions.

Flatness and mild softness dominated the late-April cash marketMonday. Enough heating load was being generated in the Northeastand Midwest to keep citygates and a number of field pointsessentially unchanged from Friday. Most of the downticks of 2-5cents again occurred in the West, where mild temperatures wereprevailing.
