Gas producers who’ve traveled around the country poking holes in the ground know that the flavor of what they get varies from basin to basin; some gas is wetter, some has a higher heat content, etc. Over the years since the manufactured gas industry evolved into the natural gas industry, consumers — residential, industrial, process, power generation — and their equipment have grown accustomed to the flavor of gas most prevalent in their particular region. One industry expert described this as an “accident of history.”

NGAS Grows Reserves, Production in Core Kentucky Area

It pays to know the territory, particularly if you’re an oil and gas driller in competition with Kentucky coal miners. NGAS Resources Inc., based in Lexington, KY, made its 20 years of experience in eastern Kentucky pay off in 2004, increasing total production by 77%, revenues by 75% and most importantly, completing an acquisition that helped bump up oil and gas assets by 316% to a value of $68.2 million from $16.4 million in 2003.

Cooler Weather Trend Helps Raise Prices

With a little help from the previous day’s futures advance, spreading cold weather was able to keep prices on the rise at nearly all points Wednesday. Only flat numbers at a couple of Rockies points prevented gains across the board. Otherwise, upticks ranged from 2 cents to about 35 cents.

Chicago Mayor Wants to Know More about Peoples Gas-Enron Relationship

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley has joined other state officials in seeking additional details regarding the Peoples Gas-Enron relationship, particularly the use of the Chicago utility’s stored gas in winter 2000/2001 by an unregulated partnership, called Enovate LLC, that was set up by Enron and Peoples Energy, the utility’s parent company.
