Cinergy to Stay in Supply Business
After power price spikes, contract defaults and costly supplydeals cost Cinergy $73 million in July, the company said it wasseriously considering quiting the supply business altogether. Rogerssaid yesterday the company’s board of directors has unanimouslydecided Cinergy should stick with it as the industry moves to acompetitive environment.

Canadians Set Long-Term Sights on MacKenzie Delta
The recent agreement between TransCanada PipeLines and theNorthwest Territories (NWT) (See Daily GPI, July 29) makes it plainthat both parties have their sights set on bigger game thanrelatively modest pipeline extensions into the southern part of theTerritories. After lying dormant for a decade, visions are revivingof a route extending all the way to the Mackenzie Delta and theBeaufort Sea to tap an estimated 13 Tcf or more of reserves foundin a 1970s drilling boom.

Florida Gas Transmission extended an Overage Alert Day notice forthe area east of Station 12 (see Daily GPI, July 30) through at least Friday’s gasday. The tolerance for daily negative imbalances remained at 3%.

Two top-10 national energy marketers, Aquila Energy and EngageEnergy, started doing business July 29 in California on EnergyMarketplace, the retail natural gas and electricity Internetshopping center operated by Southern California Gas Co. Decliningto provide dollar or transaction volume statistics on the nearlytwo-year-old site, the nation’s first retail energy Internetshopping site, a SoCalGas spokesperson would only say that thereare other major announcements regarding Energy Marketplace that arepending and should be made in the near future.
Algonquin Holds HubLine Open Season
Duke Energy’s Algonquin Gas Transmission announced an openseason for its proposed HubLine Pipeline The open season to acceptcapacity requests began July 20 and concludes on Aug. 12. Servicefor HubLine, which is designed for 600,000 Dth/d, is expected tocommence in 2002 and nominations for services starting at differentperiods will be accepted and evaluated.
Regulatory Changes Increase Mexico’s Allure
Removal of a 4% import tariff on natural gas July 1, new openaccess transportation rates and the likelihood that Mexico willbegin privatization of its electric industry this year are makingthe country a more attractive business target for the U.S. energyindustry, and California-based Sempra Energy is taking immediateadvantage of the opening.
