Majors Jockey for Position in Developing U.S. LNG Market

With National Petroleum Council projections that liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries into the United States could grow to 15 Bcf/d by 2020 from about 2.5 Bcf/d currently, all of the majors are beginning to take significant positions in the domestic LNG market. ExxonMobil said last month that it is looking at four sites for U.S. LNG terminals (see NGI, Oct. 20), and last week Shell announced its own offshore Louisiana LNG terminal, which would be in direct competition with one already planned by ChevronTexaco.

Enbridge, Fort Chicago Jockey for Bigger Share of Alliance Pipeline

Houston-based El Paso Corp. announced Friday it has agreed to sell its 14.4% interest in the Canadian and U.S. segments of the Alliance Pipeline, Aux Sable natural gas liquids (NGL) plant and associated facilities to Calgary-based Enbridge Inc. for an estimated $165 million. At the same time, Fort Chicago Energy Partners, also based in Calgary, AB, said it was taking steps to increase its share of the Canada-to-U.S. pipeline.

Futures Traders Jockey for Position Ahead of Floyd

For the second day in a row the futures market probed to eitherside of unchanged yesterday as local traders attempted to influencethe market-first higher, then lower-in choppy, range-bound trading.But for the second day in a row they received little or no helpfrom other market participants, and thus were forced to cover intheir positions before the close. That enabled the October contractto drift quietly lower Monday, closing down 2 cents to $2.781.Estimated volume of 74,785 was well below Friday’s impressive114,000 figure.
