CanadianOxy Sells Assets to Combat Low Prices
Canadian Occidental Petoleum Ltd., an independent global energyand chemical company, sold oil and gas properties worth $370million in order to take the bite out of low commodity prices, thecompany said Wednesday. This brings CanadianOxy’s 1998 propertysales to $630 million. The company did not disclose who bought theproperties. An additional $235 million of sales are expected beforethe end of January 1999.
Aquila to Supply Gas to Maine Plant
UtiliCorp United subsidiary Aquila Energy signed an eight-yearcontract to supply gas to a 265 MW independent power project beingbuilt in Rumford, in the paper processing region of western Maine.The contract is valued at $500 million. The plant is one of thefirst merchant facilities being built without a dedicated ratebase, a trend in the gradual deregulation of electricity. The plantis expected to begin operation some time in 2000.

Results of Burlington Resources, Apache Corp., and VastarResources are just the beginning of the tale of woe thatindependent producers’ will be telling with their third quarterearnings. The companies turned in results that could only beconsidered poor outside the context of depressed gas and oil pricesand liquids margins that are at historic lows. Production of allthree companies was impacted by Gulf storms and hurricanes.
Amber AEC Agree to Merge, Forming Huge Independent
Amber Energy’s board has accepted a revised merger offer fromAlberta Energy Co. (AEC) and said it will cease pursuing the saleof some of its midstream assets. AEC raised its offer for Amber by50 cents a share to $7.50, or 0.225 AEC shares for each Ambercommon share, and agreed to an aggregate limit of 4.5 millionshares, which is up from 3 million. Together, the two gas companieshold the largest gas reserve base of any publicly-owned oil and gascompany in Canada with 4 Tcf of reserves, and create one of thelargest gas producers north of the border with about 900 MMcf/d ofgas production, said AEC President and CEO Gwyn Morgan.
