Talisman: Unconventional Strategy Pays 30 Tcf Dividend

Calgary-based Talisman Energy Inc. has identified more than 132 Tcf of original gas in place (OGIP) on its North American unconventional land holdings, more than 30 Tcf of it recoverable, company officials said at an investor conference in New York last week. Those figures exclude 770,000 acres that Talisman holds in Quebec, which are still early in the evaluation phase.

Dip Below Support Sparks Futures Rally

Probing below well identified support at $8.200 in Wednesday morning trade triggered an energetic round of buying in September natural gas futures that lasted well into the afternoon. The front-month contract peaked at $8.736 just after 1 p.m. EDT before sliding to close at $8.456, which was still good for a 12.6-cent gain from Tuesday’s regular session finish.

Transportation Notes

During the installation of a pig receiver at the end of the 12-inch diameter Chattanooga Branch Line in Hamilton County, TN, Southern Natural Gas identified the need to remove a malfunctioning pipeline valve. Southern said it plans to begin the valve removal process, which is expected to take up to 24 hours, on Friday morning. Declaring it a force majeure event, Southern said it was not accepting any nominations at the Chattanooga Meter Station for Friday’s gas day, but did anticipate accepting nominations there on the Timely and Evening cycles for Saturday.

Transportation Notes

Cheyenne Plains Gas Pipeline said no problems were identified during Tuesday’s emergency shutdown test at its Cheyenne Plains Compressor Station and treating plant. It increased operationally available capacity Wednesday to 816 MMcf/d at the station and the Cheyenne Plains West constraint point, and to 874 MMcf/d at the Cheyenne Plains East constraint point. That represented a complete restoration of its system, which had been flowing about 780 MMcf/d prior to a mid-September station fire that briefly required a total shutdown (see Daily GPI, Sept. 18).

Scientists Clear Industry of Blame for Gas in Water Wells

A two-year investigation has identified the prime suspect behind environmental horror stories that threaten to stunt the growth of infant coalbed methane production in Canada — and the culprit is not the industry. The report squashes a major source of public opposition to developing the province’s estimated 500 Tcf endowment of coalbed methane, in seams the right thickness and depth to be considered candidates for development.
