Alberta NatGas Output Falling; Technology Lifts Oil
Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (fracking) has powered the biggest increase since the 1970s in Alberta oil production from flowing wells outside the northern bitumen sands belt, according to the provincial Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB). Output from flowing wells jumped by 14% in 2012 to 559,000 b/d, and should average 593,000 b/d this year, according to the board’s annual report.
California BLM Puts Lease Sales on Hold for Remainder of Year
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has postponed a lease sale in California that was scheduled for May 22 due to budget constraints, a shift in priorities to inspection and enforcement of existing leases, and processing of new applications for permits to drill. This was the only lease sale that the agency had proposed in the state for the remainder of the fiscal year.

The Interior Department is “very close” to releasing rules governing the use of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) of oil and natural gas wells located on public lands, Secretary Sally Jewell said Tuesday in her first appearance before Congress.
Three California Drilling Bills Advance
Three bills that if enacted would place a moratorium on using hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in drilling operations, as well as review oil and gas drilling practices, have advanced in the California legislature along partisan lines in a body dominated by Democrats.
Interior Chief Doesn’t See ‘One-Size-Fits-All’ for Fracking
Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, in only her second week on the job, signaled last week that new rules governing federal regulation of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) are imminent.
New York Energy Industry ‘Imperiled,’ Says IOGA
The New York oil and natural gas industry is “imperiled” and “in crisis” because of the ongoing delay over whether to allow hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in horizontal drilling, according to a recent letter sent to Gov. Andrew Cuomo by the Independent Oil & Gas Association of New York (IOGA).
Colorado Bill Would Spur Higher Oil/Gas Emissions Standards
A bill to require oil and natural gas companies to meet enhanced water and air emissions standards in order to earn streamlined state environmental permitting was introduced Tuesday by the majority leaders of both houses in the Colorado legislature.

Oil, NatGas Industry Water Use Charted in Texas
While water use for hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in drought-stricken Texas is considered modest when compared to other uses, such as for agriculture, where the water is drawn from is a significant consideration, according to an analysis by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).
