Eastern Coal Producer Ups Coalbed Methane Production, Reserves

CONSOL Energy Inc., the second largest natural gas producer and reserve holder in the Appalachian Basin, has reported increases in both coalbed methane (CBM) production and reserve totals for 2004. The company increased its CBM reserves by 4% or 90 Bcf, to more than a Tcf during 2004, at the same time increasing production to 50 Bcf during the year, about 12% more than the 44 Bcf produced in 2003.

Allegheny Poised to Take Legal Action Against California

Once the holder of one of the largest electricity supply deals with California, Allegheny Energy Supply said last week it has filed claims with the state’s Board of Control for what it alleges are “monetary damages” inflicted on it by the state’s “bad-faith actions” abrogating a long-term supply deal. State actions, which still have not terminated the deal, nevertheless have caused the company “significant negative financial” problems, Allegheny said.

Duke Energy North America announced the sale of its ownership interest in Duke Energy McClain to NRG Energy. Duke Energy McClain is the holder of a 77% interest in the McClain energy generating facility, a 500 MW merchant power facility under construction in Oklahoma. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The McClain facility is a combined-cycle, natural gas-fired merchant generation facility located near Newcastle, OK. Construction of the facility began in March 2000, with commercial operations set to begin this summer. Duke Energy McClain closed on the sale of a 23% interest in the facility to the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority in March 2001. The sale of the McClain facility is expected to close in the third quarter of 2001.

El Paso Energy Corp. completed its acquisition of Crystal GasStorage Inc. of Shreveport, LA. Each holder of Crystal Gas Storagecommon stock received $57 per share in cash in a deal worth $224.6million. “The Crystal assets provide the flexibility, highdeliverability, and multiple pipeline interconnects necessary tomeet the gas supply demands of new plants in the competitive powermarket,” said El Paso CEO William A. Wise.
