Salazar Gets Earful from Pro- and Anti-OCS Drilling Sectors

On the second leg of a four-city tour to hear from stakeholders as an Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) energy policy is crafted, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar last Wednesday faced a crowd in New Orleans that was decidedly more friendly to oil and natural gas than the East Coast audience that he met earlier last week. Gulf Coast congressional members and industry representatives said the Obama administration’s plans to move toward renewables was a solid idea, but conventional gas and oil production remained paramount to domestic energy security. They also blasted the administration’s proposed to raise producer taxes.

Futures Drop Nearly 40 Cents Following Surprise Storage Injection

While the natural gas industry had braced itself for a bearish storage withdrawal for the week ended March 20, it was not prepared to hear of the year’s first injection when the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) natural gas storage report was released Thursday morning. After the EIA reported that 3 Bcf was added to underground inventories, natural gas futures dropped more than 30 cents in Thursday morning trade and ended up closing the regular session at $3.947, down 38.2 cents from Wednesday’s finish.

Senate Proposals Broaden Role of EIA, FERC in Energy Markets

A Senate subcommittee is scheduled to hear testimony Wednesday on two proposed bills that would require the administrator of the Energy Information Administration (EIA) to develop a plan to collect information on the ownership of all commercially held oil and natural gas inventories in the country, and would give FERC cease-and-desist authority in natural gas and electricity markets.

Islander East Pipe Strikes Out at Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court last Monday refused to hear an appeal of a lower court’s decision that let stand Connecticut’s denial of a water quality permit for the proposed Connecticut-to-Long Island Islander East Pipeline. While the “legal route for this project has ended,” the sponsors plan to look at possible alternatives, a Spectra Energy Corp. spokeswoman said.

NorthernStar Oregon LNG Hearing Continued into November

County officials ran out of time last Monday to hear from all the citizens who wanted to say something about NorthernStar Natural Gas’ proposed Bradwood Landing liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal along the Columbia River in Oregon, so the public hearing will be continued on Nov. 19. Clatsop County Commissioners are weighing whether to grant NorthernStar zoning changes for the project.
