NRG: Gas Will Back-up Wind Power, But LNG Supplies Uncertain

California’s headlong rush toward an eventual renewable portfolio standard (RPS) goal of 33% of the state’s power coming from environmentally clean resources by 2020 could greatly expand the market from natural gas-fired power generation, according to Steve Hoffmann, senior vice president with NRG Energy Inc. With wind power back-up is key. He pointed out that during a recent heat wave less than 2% of the wind power connected to the system was actually functioning.

Renewable Push Can Expand Gas-Powered Generation Market

California’s headlong rush toward an eventual renewable portfolio standard (RPS) goal of 33% of the state’s power coming from environmentally clean resources by 2020 could greatly expand the market from natural gas-fired power generation, according to Steve Hoffmann, senior vice president with NRG Energy Inc. Diversifying electric generation fuels may expand, not lessen, the influence of gas in the next five to 10 years, he said from his perspective running NRG’s western operations.

Some $1-Plus Drops Seen as Cash Losses Grow Greater

The screen slowed this week’s headlong plunge considerably Tuesday, but cash prices continued a meltdown of major proportions as winter weather support remains missing in action for the most part. Quotes fell by more than half a dollar across the board, with most declines exceeding 65 cents and a few points in the Northeast and Midcontinent/Midwest recording drops of a dollar or more.

Rockies Pipes Hold Out Against Overall Price Plunges

Nobody got faked out by the semi-pause Thursday in last week’s headlong price tumble. As NGI sources had predicted, softening resumed Friday with a vengeance. Except for flat to only moderately lower numbers in the Rockies, prices tended to slump between about 40 cents and nearly $1.80. Most losses were in the range of 50-80 cents.

Mild Softness Prevails; Cal Border Falls Nearly $10

While the Southern California border stepped up its headlongrush to rejoin the overall gas market and the other two Californiapoints saw big losses, all other points experienced only mildsoftness Wednesday. Only Texas Eastern-Kosciusko and two Northeastpoints (into Algonquin and Iroquois Zone 2) fell more than a dimeamong the non-California markets.

Cash Market Takes Pit Stop on Down-Hill Track

Cash prices took a cue from the futures screen Thursday andpulled out of their headlong dive that has dominated the marketsince Monday. But sources considered the general leveling off ofprices, which leaned slightly to the softer side, as onlytemporary. Noting that Northern market areas already have startedcooling off from their recent temperature heights and that thecooling trend is expected to spread further this weekend, manytraders expect the general downturn to resume today.
