Bearish Storage Data Demotes Prices Again

To say the weekly storage report has had an impact on thenatural gas futures market lately would be a gross understatement.Following an impressive 69 Bcf injection on Sept. 1, the futuresmarket dropped 26.6 cents the very next day. Then a week later,following the release of a relatively small 66 Bcf refill, themarket took a wild, 24-cent ride higher to close the session in themid-$2.80s. Now, a week later the question that everyone is askingis whether we will see another big move today. At first glance theanswer to that question was a resounding “yes” because shortlyafter the storage figures were released the October contracttumbled a dime lower in after-hours Access trading.

Unocal Buying Large Stake in Northrock

Unocal Corp. subsidiary Unocal Canada Resources is buying a 46%stake in Calgary-based Northrock Resources Ltd. for C$265 million(US$175 million). The company has average daily gross production of160 MMcf/d of gas and 11,000 b/d of crude oil and gas liquids andholds net proved reserves of 35 million bbl of oil and liquids and363 Bcf of gas. Northrock also has valued its exploration assets(land and seismic) at C$132 million (US$88 million).

Evergreen Expands Raton Basin Presence

Evergreen Resources, Inc. announced Thursday the acquisition of41,000 gross Raton Basin acres from Infinity Inc. affiliate, CISOil and Gas, for $8.5 million. Evergreen estimates this additionwill increase its coal-bed methane proved net gas reserves by 22.5Bcf. The company now holds working majority interest in 200,000acres in the basin. The effective date of the transaction was Dec.31, 1998.

Study Calls Gas Unbundling a ‘Minimal Success’

Given the “slim to non-existent gross margins” for marketers,retail gas unbundling at the state level has been a “minimalsuccess” at best so far, according to the results of a study ofmore than 100 LDCs released earlier this week.
