New Mexico Examines Greenhouse Gas Limits

A New Mexico state environmental board on Monday began a week-long series of hearings on a proposed rule to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that could carry significant impact for the state’s coal-fired electric generation plants and its sizable oil/natural gas industry. The board is looking at two approaches to addressing the limits.

EPA Upholds Finding to Regulate GHG Emissions Under CAA

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Thursday upheld its December 2009 endangerment finding, which held that carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions pose a danger to the public’s health and welfare. The finding provided the legal trigger for the agency to regulate emissions under the Clean Air Act (CAA) (see Daily GPI, Dec. 8, 2009).

MIT Scientists Press Case for Natural Gas

Natural gas will be a leader in reducing U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the next several decades, mostly by replacing older, inefficient coal plants with combined-cycle gas generation, according to a comprehensive study issued Friday by a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) study group.

FERC Urged Not to Create Barriers to Gas-Fired Generation

As the federal government moves to cut greenhouse gas emissions, FERC should recognize the critical role of natural gas to provide baseload generation and complement variable energy resources (VER), such as wind and solar energy, because of its ability to quickly and reliably ramp up to meet electric customers’ demand when wind or sun energy is disrupted, said the Natural Gas Supply Association (NGSA).

Gas Investment a Must, Say Energy Executives

A greenhouse gas (GHG) emission policy eventually will be enacted in the United States, and combined with efforts to combat emissions around the world, natural gas is a “clear winner,” the president of ExxonMobil Gas & Power Marketing Co. said last week.
