PNM Grabs Western Resources’ Utilities for $4.4 Billion

Public Service Co. of New Mexico is gaining a strong presence inthe Midwest/Midcontinent power market with the $4.4 billionpurchase, including debt assumption, of Western Resources’utilities. The proposed merger would create a new Albuquerque-basedholding company serving more than one million retail electriccustomers and 400,000 retail gas customers in New Mexico andKansas, with a generating capacity of more than 7,000 MW.

DukeSolutions Grabs Waste Management Facilities

DukeSolutions is hauling in eight independent power facilitiesfor $81 million from Houston-based Waste Management Inc., and hasplans to invest another $20 million into the cogeneration andrenewable energy facilities in California, Pennsylvania, Maine andFlorida. Together, the facilities generate 244 MW and revenues overthe next 15 years could exceed $1 billion.

AEC Snags McMurry Oil, Grabs 35% Stake in Jonah Field

Alberta Energy Co. Ltd. became more U.S. than Canadian produceryesterday by grabbing a major foothold in the Rocky Mountainregion. The company is buying all the common shares of McMurry Oil,which owns 1.2 Tcf of gas reserves and significant explorationacreage in the Jonah Field in the Green River Basin in southwesternWyoming. It also is purchasing the 245-mile Jonah Field gasgathering system, which currently transports 320 MMcf/d of gas andis primed for an expansion to 440 MMcf/d. The transactions werevalued at a total of C$1.15 billion.

Kerr-McGee Grabs Hot Atlantic Canadian Play

Kerr-McGee Corp. has bought a 50% stake in four explorationlicenses covering 1.5 million acres offshore Nova Scotia, Canada,from Canadian 88 Energy Corp. for $10.5 million. The deepwaterexploration prospects are located 125 miles south of Halifax inwater depths from 500 to 9,200 feet.

LNG Grabs Larger Share of NE Power Market

The birth of a New England power plant will spawn more importsof LNG to the United States. Last week it was announced that SitheEnergies Inc. will feed its 1,600 MW Mystic Station in Everett, MA,with LNG imported by nearby Cabot LNG Corp.

Pepco announced an agreement to provide a comprehensiveintegrated energy management system to Southern Management Corp., aVienna,VA-based owner and operator of over 25,000 apartment homesin the Washington D.C. and Baltimore areas. No financial terms ofthe deal were announced.
