An independent California-based geologist who has studied the Monterey Shale thinks it could eventually fulfill some of the hype surrounding its long-term reserves, but first it is going to take more serious geologic study and some small operators willing to take the risks that the big companies are not going to take.

The administration of Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett says new natural gas pipelines should be allowed to share rights-of-way (ROW) with roadways, one of 16 policy recommendations made to fulfill a requirement of the state’s new omnibus Marcellus Shale law, Act 13.

U.S. shale gas plays continued to make a substantial contribution to the country’s natural gas production, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said Tuesday in a report that cited supply gains last month. However, a declining rig count signals that production declines are on the way, the agency said.

Strong growth in the total marketed production of natural gas last year — an estimated increase of 4.8 Bcf/d (7.9%) compared with 2010 — was driven in large part by increases in shale gas production, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Natural gas-fired generation and storage in Wyoming and California could play a key role if Wyoming is to fulfill a long-term strategy of making itself a major exporter of wind-generated electricity, according to a second phase study released Monday by the state Energy Office and Wyoming Infrastructure Authority (WIA). The cost of a 12 GW wind collector system and integration system for wind and natural gas would total tens of billions of dollars, the report said.

To fulfill the terms of El Paso Corp.’s western energy settlement, the company on Tuesday priced an offering of 8.8 million shares of common stock at a public offering price of $8.35 per share — 50 cents higher than the company had announced last month (see Daily GPI, Dec. 24, 2003).

With strong natural gas production pulled up in its ever-larger U.S. Rockies assets, North America’s leading independent, EnCana Corp., said it would meet its sales growth targets this year and in 2003, after improving its quarterly oil and natural gas daily sales by 9% and generating more than C$1 billion in cash flow.
