New Mexico County Oil/Gas Ban to Be Short-Lived, Industry Rep Says

More than a year after becoming the only local jurisdiction in New Mexico to ban all oil and natural gas activity, Mora County’s three-member elected commission voted last Tuesday against repealing the ban it passed in April 2013. However, an industry representative predicts that the ban will be repealed next year.

Mexican Shale Discovery Prompts $10.4B Pipeline Plan

Prompted in large part by the recent discovery of significant shale gas deposits in the country’s north and east, Mexico will invest $10.4 billion to build more than 2,800 miles of natural gas pipelines and local distribution networks by 2018, a nearly 40% increase compared with the country’s current pipeline network, President Felipe Calderon said.

California has hedged itself reasonably well against the continuing uncertainty of natural gas prices and supplies, but the state needs to foster development of more regional western transmission pipeline and storage infrastructure while also determining the long-term potential for more shale gas, given the adverse environmental impacts it can carry. This is the essence of the natural gas portion of the state’s latest Integrated Energy Policy Report (IEPR), which is predominantly focused on the electricity sector.
