Natural gas futures traders continued their recent stretch of back-and-forth trading as the May contract shrugged off Friday’s nickel advance and dropped nearly a dime on Monday. The prompt-month contract reached a low of $3.902 before closing out the regular session at $3.944, down 9.5 cents from Friday’s finish.

After bouncing back and forth in small increments, it was only fitting that May natural gas futures would keep to the program on Friday by gaining only 1.9 cents to close at $3.801, which was 6.4 cents higher than their close in the previous week.

Aided by prior-day futures weakness, cash points on Thursday continued the week’s trend of back and forth by recording drops across the country. While most regions saw decreases of 20 to 45 cents, some eastern delivery points dropped on Thursday by over 60 cents.
Futures Surge 8.5% Higher on Near-term Cold
Following a couple of back-and-forth trading sessions, prompt-month natural gas futures on Wednesday exploded 8.5% higher as colder than normal temperatures took hold in a number of regions around the country. After topping out at $7.750 on the day, November futures — which expire Friday — settled at $7.693, up 60.2 cents on the day.
Futures Post Small Rally on Short-Covering
July natural gas was mostly quiet Wednesday as traders pushed the contract back and forth between the day’s $6.500 to $6.680 range. After reaching the day’s high late in the session on a little short-covering, the prompt month ended up settling at $6.588, up 8.6 cents on the day.
