Faced with conflicting reports about the need for new pipelinecapacity to serve the Northeast quadrant of the country, theFederal Energy Regulatory Commission last week called for aninquiry into the area’s projected demand for natural gas over thenext 20 years.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission yesterday approved aninitiative calling for it to conduct an inquiry into projecteddemand for natural gas in the Northeast quadrant of the UnitedStates and the corresponding need for new pipeline capacity in theregion.

The White House has given the green-light to the renomination ofCommissioner Curt Hebert Jr. for a full five-year term at theFederal Energy Regulatory Commission. “It’s my understanding thatthey’ve signed off on my nomination,” Hebert told NGI.SenateMajority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) sent a letter to the White Housein January seeking his renomination. The Senate EnergyCommitteeis expected to schedule a hearing after Congress returns fromrecess in mid-April, at which time it will begin to schedule ahearing.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is considering callingon government and industry resources to help make its ownassessment of the future demand outlook for natural gas in theeastern half of the United States and the need for new pipelinecapacity, Chairman James Hoecker said last week.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has granted finalenvironmental approval to the U.S. portion of Vector Pipeline,moving it within one step of receiving certification. TheCommission’s action comes in the wake of the National EnergyBoard’s final approval of the Canadian leg of the project.
