EIA: Domestic Production Surge Centered on Shale Plays

Total domestic natural gas production will grow from 21.0 Tcf in 2009 to 26.3 Tcf in 2035, according to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) “Annual Energy Outlook 2011” (AEO2011), which was released last week. The projected production for 2035 is 3.0 Tcf more than EIA had forecast in its previous annual outlook (see NGI, Dec. 21, 2009).

JayHawk Energy Inc. has begun evaluating for drilling its recently acquired acreage in the Bakken Shale. The Post Falls, ID-based company also said it was looking to add more acreage to its Bakken holdings and plans to accelerate its efforts through purchases and joint ventures through 2011. JayHawk has procured more than 1,066 gross acres — about 135 net acres — in Divide County, ND. Spacing of wells is currently 1,280 acres, so JayHawk said it will pool its acreage with other interest holders in order to drill a well, possibly by 4Q2011.

NorthWestern Buys Montana Natural Gas Reserves

In a deal that also includes the local gathering pipeline system, Sioux Falls, SD-based NorthWestern Energy Corp. earlier in September announced that it had bought a majority interest in the Battle Creek Natural Gas Field on Sweetgrass Arch in Blaine County, MT, from a private owner. It includes the seller’s interest in the Battle Creek Gathering System Joint Venture.

NorthWestern Gets Interim Rate Hikes in Montana

Sioux Falls, SD-based NorthWestern Corp.’s Montana utility operations were granted electricity and natural gas interim retail rate increases by the state regulatory commission, the utility said Friday. The new rates were effective on Thursday.

NEB: Canadian Gas Continued Export Retreat

Canadian exports took falls on all fronts in the international natural gas trade’s last contract year, according to records of the National Energy Board (NEB). Deliveries to the United States slipped by 10.7% in the 12 months ending Oct. 31. Prices dropped 49%. Revenues plunged by 54.5%.
