August natural gas futures gained ground Tuesday on the day prior to expiration. Traders see little in the way to suggest that any fundamentals have changed, and perceived the day’s activity as movement within a broad and uninspired trading range. At the close August natural gas rose 6.3 cents to $4.675 and September added 6.3 cents as well to $4.646. September crude oil tumbled $1.48 to $77.50/bbl.

Traders followed the script of the last few days in pushing the February natural gas futures contract lower on its Wednesday expiration. The contract broke below the recent range’s $5.354 low to $5.223 before going off the board at $5.274, down 21.1 cents from Tuesday’s finish. The March contract, which now assumes front-month status, dropped 20.6 cents to close at $5.224.

NatGas Futures Plunge After December’s Expiration on a High Note
With the December contract’s expiration rally on Monday already a mere memory, January natural gas futures on Tuesday plunged lower as traders weighed cold winter forecasts against the healthy natural gas storage situation. The newly minted front month put in a low on the day of $6.347 before closing the regular session at $6.386, down 44.1 cents from Monday’s close.
