While much of the East Coast was still digging out from Sunday’s blizzard, as evidenced by some cash point averages jumping several dollars for Tuesday delivery, natural gas futures traders on Monday were focusing on the future, which is why the January contract — a day ahead of expiration — dipped below $4 for the third time in two weeks before rallying to close at $4.112, up 2.9 cents from last Thursday’s finish.

Liquids-rich unconventional gas plays, particularly shales, are continuing to drive midstream spending as evidenced by two announcements last week out of the Eagle Ford Shale as well as the Cana-Woodford Shale and Granite Wash plays.

The day before the Pittsburgh City Council voted to prohibit natural gas drilling there (see Shale Daily, Nov. 17), commissioners in South Fayette Township, on Pittsburgh’s southwestern edge, voted to ban drilling in conservation areas and all residential zones, including suburban communities and rural farmland.
