Northeast Spikes Lead Gains Amid Mixed Pricing

Most cash points continued to rise Tuesday as the latest cold wave began to engulf much of the East. Northeast citygates realized triple-digit spikes due to what one forecaster described as blizzard-like conditions expected in the region Wednesday. However, warming trends had a good deal of the West and Midcontinent falling by 2-3 cents to as much as 15 cents.

$1-Plus Midcontinent, West Gains Lead Overall Rally

Severe winter weather, having already arrived in the West and predicted to engulf much of the rest of the U.S. by the end of the week, sparked rising prices at a solid majority of points Monday. The Midcontinent and West regions, which had recorded all of the preceding Wednesday’s dollar-plus plunges, also saw all of the Monday rally’s triple-digit gains that ranged as high as about $1.80.

Mild Forecasts Spark Renewed Push Toward the $2.00 Mark

Amid updated weather forecasts confirming the warming trend that is set to engulf the entire Eastern half of the nation this week, natural gas futures dove lower Tuesday, as traders returned from the holiday weekend and promptly liquidated long positions initiated early last week. February took the selling squarely on the chin, gapping lower at the open bell, and not once looking back as it came just one tick away from notching a new contract low at $2.094. It closed with an even 13-cent decline at $2.106.
