Electrical grid operators were able to meet the demand without any significant disruptions in service. Demand records tumbled like dominoes in the Northeast, the Midwest and Ontario.

Trailblazer declared a force majeure at its compressor station 602 in Lincoln County, NB on Monday. The station experienced an unexpected outage due to an internal electrical failure on one of its compressor units. The estimated duration of the outage is four weeks. Effective on the Intraday 1 cycle for Tuesday and continuing until further notice, secondary out-of-path and ITS/AOR volumes will not be available for scheduling. Trailblazer estimates that 800,000 Dth of firm capacity will be available during the outage. Therefore, nominated primary firm and secondary in-the-path firm transportation will be scheduled pro rata based on the shipper’s primary contract MDQ in accordance with Trailblazer’s tariff. Trailblazer expects to be able to confirm 94.5% of total contracted MDQ for primary firm transportation.

Citing an electrical problem at the Hastings Extraction Plant, Dominion said it was required to take most of its wet gas system out of service immediately Wednesday. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the outage is expected to last two days, it added. Dominion said it had made arrangements to move some of the wet gas off system to Equitrans. Production physically located in the 3401, 3402, 3403, 3404, 3405, 3406, 3407, 3408, 3409 bubbles behind Camden Station and bubbles 3304, 3305 and 3303 behind Kennedy Station may stay online during this outage, Dominion said, while pool operators must shut in all other gas in the wet system.
Report: Sharp Decline in Gas Resources Offshore Nova Scotia Signals Need for New Policy
Nova Scotia’s energy policy is outdated, said Larry Hughes, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Dalhousie University in Halifax, citing a 60% collapse in estimated natural gas reserves offshore Nova Scotia last year to only 1.35 Tcf (from an original estimate of 3.5 Tcf), the production declines at the Sable Offshore Energy Project and the industry’s turn to liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports.
NEB Projects Canada’s Power Demand to Grow 40% by 2025
Canada’s increasing population, economic growth and increased use of electrical equipment will increase the demand for power nearly 40% in the next 20 years, according to a new report by the National Energy Board (NEB).
DOE Study Calls for Regular Assessment of U.S. Power Grid
An eagerly anticipated comprehensive study of the nation’s electrical transmission highway unveiled last Wednesday by the Department of Energy (DOE) recommends that the federal agency review the grid every two years to pinpoint “national interest” transmission bottlenecks. The report also says that Congress should give FERC limited federal transmission siting authority and recommends that regional transmission organizations (RTOs) be made responsible for ensuring that transmission bottlenecks are addressed.
Ontario Assured of Reliable Power Supply for Decade
Based on existing electrical facilities and proposed additions in Ontario, the Canadian province is expected to have a reliable supply of electricity for the next 10 years under a wide variety of conditions, according to a recent report issued by Ontario’s Independent Electricity Market Operator (IMO).

Westcoast declared force majeure after its Pine River Plant lostelectrical power and was forced to shut down all processingoperations late Wednesday afternoon. The plant had reported 153MMcf in receipts for Wednesday’s gas day. One-third of Pine River’soperational capacity had been restored around midnight PSTWednesday, two-thirds was operational at 8 a.m. Thursday, “and Isee [from SCADA instrumentation] that we’ve just now returned to100%,” a plant spokesman told NGI shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday.

Panda Energy International inked a firm electrical transmissionagreement with Arizona Public Service to supply power from itsproposed natural gas-fired 2,000 MW plant to be located in the townof Gila Bend. The proposed plant is before the Arizona CorporationCommittee for review. Senior vice president of merchant plantdevelopment for Panda, Garry Hubbard, said that the firm contractis “a critical step forward for the plant.” The new plant is onschedule to commence construction later this year, with start up 18months later, he added. Powering the plant will be eight GeneralElectric 7 FA natural gas turbines operating in combined cycle.
