Chesapeake Energy Corp., Consolidated Edison and Statoil Natural Gas have stepped up with binding precedent agreements for capacity on an expansion of Spectra Energy Corp.’s Texas Eastern Transmission and Algonquin Gas Transmission systems to deliver gas to the New Jersey and New York area. The commitments are enough for the company to proceed with the project, Spectra said.

SoCal Edison Eyes First Carbon Capture Power Project

It could take up to $2 billion and the next six years, but engineers at Southern California Edison Co. (SCE) think it is realistic to hope that a consortium by 2015 can turn petroleum refinery waste into an integrated gas combined-cycle (IGCC) power plant with carbon capture storage in nearby oil fields. But SCE’s project manager, Mark Nelson, told NGI the first step is to complete a feasibility study.

FERC Weighs Using Backstop Authority to Site SoCal Edison’s DPV2

FERC last Monday began consulting with Southern California Edison Co. (SCE) on its proposed Devers-to-Palo Verde 2 (DPV2) high-voltage transmission line, taking its first step under the agency’s new authority to consider a request to site interstate electric transmission facilities in National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors if state regulators have “withheld approval” on a project for more than a year.

KeySpan Sets Gas Demand Record; Power Demand Also Peaks on ComEd, PECO

Exelon’s two utility subsidiaries, Commonwealth Edison in Chicago and Philadelphia-based PECO, reported record winter peak power demand last Monday because of extremely cold temperatures and customer growth, and KeySpan said its New York and Long Island utility operations both set new gas demand records when it averaged about 14 degrees in the KeySpan service territory.
