Changes in Environmental Policy Could Be Bad News for Gas Industry

The Bush administration is considering plans that would ease environmental restrictions on upgraded existing coal-fired power plants and potentially force the delay or cancellation of a significant amount of new gas-fired power generation. Some industry observers estimate the potential impact at about 40,000 MW of generation capacity or roughly about 8 Bcf/d of gas demand.

The Department of Defense (DOD) could potentially reduce demand on the western power grid by generating 90 MW of electricity and implementing conservation initiatives, although the use of DOD assets raises environmental and mission concerns, the General Accounting Office (GAO) recently told Congress. The GAO also said that although significant private back-up generation capacity exists in California its potential use is limited due to business and environmental risks.

CA Regulatory Decision Could Help Ease Gas Prices Further

Freeing up 27 Bcf of supplies in an idle Southern California Gas Co. underground storage facility this summer could help further reduce natural gas prices in California this summer, the state’s chief energy regulatory agency said Wednesday. It is one of several items on the California Public Utilities Commission agenda for today that are aimed at easing the summer electricity supply and price crisis.

TRC Hears Calls for Less Regulation
