Williams Partners LP and a unit of Royal Dutch Shell plc have partnered on an ambitious midstream venture to invest in natural gas liquids (NGL) and dry gas handling infrastructure to serve Marcellus and Utica shale operators in northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio.

Royal Dutch Shell plc said Tuesday it’s ready to invest “several hundred million dollars” in promising technology companies to accelerate innovations that might add value to its operations.

North American-based units of Royal Dutch Shell plc and Volvo Trucks have agreed to “collaborate and coordinate” on liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology in heavy duty commercial vehicles.

Privately-held Marcellus GTL LLC plans to build a natural gas-to-liquids (GTL) processing plant in Blair County, PA, in the heart of the Marcellus Shale.

Royal Dutch Shell plc and others in related industries are continuing their push for using natural gas as a transportation fuel. Several states also are adding incentives.

As another step forward to use dedicated liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered barges in its maritime transport, Royal Dutch Shell plc recently launched the first dedicated LNG barge from a shipyard in the Netherlands for transporting liquids products on the Rhine River. Shell already has touted similar petroleum product shipping in the United States (see Daily GPI, March 6).
