Northwest Natural Reports ‘Strong’ 1Q2006 Results

Portland, OR-based Northwest Natural Gas Co. Thursday marked its 50th consecutive year of dividend growth and reiterated strong first-quarter 2006 and full-year 2005 earnings during its annual shareholders meeting. Earnings for the first quarter were up compared to the same period last year ($1.48/ vs. $1.43/diluted share for the respective periods), and profits for all of 2005 exceeded those the previous year ($2.11/diluted share last year, compared to $1.86/diluted share for 2004).

PG&E Begins Layoffs, Warns of Gas Shortage

After suspending payment of its fourth quarter dividend of 30cents/share and requesting emergency assistance from the state forbuying natural gas on Wednesday, Pacific Gas & Electric Co.said Thursday it will immediately lay off 325 employees and cutcustomer services to save $180 million. The utility unit ofPG&E Corp. plans to cut another 675 jobs if its cash situationdoes not improve over the next few months, Pacific Gas and ElectricPresident Gordon Smith said in a memo sent to employees onThursday.
