Sempra Gets Final FERC Approval for Cameron LNG Re-Export

After satisfying final technical requirements, San Diego-based Sempra Energy on Tuesday obtained final FERC approval to begin re-exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from its Cameron import terminal in Hackberry, LA. However, a Sempra LNG spokesperson would not say whether any cargoes were ready to be reshipped.

Southern California Edison Co. last Friday reconnected its Unit 3 at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station along the Pacific Coast in the far north end of San Diego County, marking the completion of a 10-year, $671 million replacement of the steam generators at both of the 2,200 MW nuclear plant’s two operating units. Unit 3 was taken down for planned maintenance and the generator replacement early in October last year. The other unit completed similar work in 2009 as part of an overall effort that the utility estimated will save its customers more than $1 billion over the remaining licensing period for the plant that runs through 2022.

San Diego Gas and Electric Co. CEO Jessie Knight has been named the cochair of the Southern California Leadership Council, a regional economic development organization he helped found six years ago. Knight and former California Gov. Gray Davis co-chair the group, which seeks to provide a “platform” for business and community leaders to speak “as one voice” on public policy issues such as job creation.

San Diego-based Sempra Energy’s pipeline/storage business said last Tuesday it had begun service in Cavern 4 at its Bay Gas Storage facility in Alabama, adding 5 Bcf of working capacity that is fully subscribed, according to the operator. Construction of a fifth cavern at the salt dome natural gas storage facility is under way.

Sempra, RBS Sell Retail Commodity Unit

Noting that they are very close to an announcement for selling their joint venture North American trading assets, San Diego-based Sempra Energy and the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) announced last Monday that Noble Group Ltd. has agreed to acquire Sempra Energy Solutions, a retail unit of the RBS Sempra Commodities joint venture. The sale was for $317 million in cash, along with assumption of $265 million in debt.
