Senators Tell CFTC, FERC to Get Along and Regulate

Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), chairwoman of the Senate Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee, Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), the chairman and ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, have called on FERC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to execute more robust memorandums of understanding (MOU) to resolve their jurisdictional disputes, which the lawmakers said are hampering oversight of the nation’s energy markets.

U.S. Sens Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Carl Levin (D-MI) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) announced plans last week to introduce the Oil and Gas Traders Oversight Act, which would require companies that trade in the electronic over-the-counter (OTC) energy trading business to keep records for five years on large trading positions and report those positions to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) or the Justice Department upon request.
