Record-Setting Futures Fail to Avert Cash Softness

Apparently the screen’s meteoric rise of more than a dollar over the previous two days, culminating in Tuesday’s all-time intraday and daily settlement records for a prompt month contract, wasn’t all that impressive to cash traders Wednesday. Nor was heating load staying fairly heavy across northern market areas despite prospects for a bit of moderation from earlier in the week.

PG&E Advances on $9.6B Settlement Financing; S&P Signals Rating Upgrade

Culminating a week of progress in pulling together the financing underpinning of its exit from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. on Friday announced that it intends to offer $6.7 billion in first mortgage bonds to help pay credit claims in its $12 billion utility bankruptcy. This followed announcement earlier in the week that the utility secured $2.9 billion in credit facility commitments and authorization from California state regulators for its new financial structure.

White House Sees Immediate Price Relief from Energy Plan

Culminating a three-month, behind-closed-doors effort, the Bush administration’s energy task force last week issued its much-anticipated report in which it mapped out a long-term strategy to bolster the nation’s sagging energy infrastructure, promote conservation and efficiency efforts, accelerate siting of transmission and open more public lands to producers to head off a worsening “storm cloud on the horizon.” The report sets the “tone” for the entire federal government on energy policy, telling it this is “the” issue on which to focus.
