Questar Pipeline launched a major pipeline expansion initiative Tuesday in conjunction with plans announced recently to move forward with the eastern portion of its Southern Trails Pipeline to California (see Daily GPI, April 10) and in response to strong demand for capacity on several other downstream pipelines, particularly Kern River. Questar also said it is moving forward with plans to build the Rocky Mountain region’s first high deliverability salt cavern storage operation, and will attempt to turn its existing pipeline system into a market hub.

The new marketing operation has about 60 employees, most ofwhom previously worked for Pan-Alberta. Southern Company EnergyMarketing announced in January that it had agreed in principle tomanage the assets of Pan-Alberta, Canada’s second-largest exporterof natural gas. Southern has marketed about 7 Bcf/d, whilePan-Alberta has sold about 1.2 Bcf/d. Pan-Alberta is owned by morethan 400 Western Canada natural gas producers and has nearly US$1.5billion in sales annually. Its assets include long-term dedicatedgas supply arrangements and more than 1.2 Bcf/d of pipelinetransportation capacity.

Financing for Maritimes & Northeast in Place
Duke Energy in conjunction with affiliates of Westcoast EnergyInc., Mobil Corporation and NS Power Holdings Inc. recentlycompleted the project financing for the U.S. and Canadian portionsof the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline project.
ComEd to Sell 4,085 MW Of Fossil Generation
ComEd announced it plans to sell the Collins generating stationand the company’s peaking units in conjunction with the sale of itscoal-fired generation business. The company said it received anumber of attractive proposals for all the power plants during thefirst phase of its coal plant auction. A “short list'” of qualifiedbidders on all the plants is being compiled for the next phase.
