The last of Gov. Jerry Brown’s three appointments to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), Mark Ferron, won confirmation from the California Senate to a six-year term that began last year. The five-member CPUC now has a full complement of regulators. Ferron, a former investment banker with Deutsche Bank, Salomon Brothers and Bank of America, brings a financial background to the regulatory panel. Prior to his appointment, Ferron was a senior partner at Silicon Valley Social Ventures and a board fellow of the New Teacher Center.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee has scheduled a confirmation hearing Wednesday (March 14) to consider multiple nominations to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Energy Information Administration (EIA) and the Interior Department. The nominees include Tony Clark, who currently is chairman of the North Dakota Public Service Commission, to be a FERC commissioner; John Norris for a second term at FERC; Adam Sieminski, chief energy economist for Deutsche Bank, to head the EIA; and Marcilynn Burke to be an assistant secretary of the Interior.

October natural gas futures jumped Tuesday on largely technical factors as traders hinted that any confirmation of a market bottom would require weathering the vagaries of Thursday’s inventory report. October rose 7.9 cents to $3.909 and November added 6.9 cents to $4.024. October crude oil added $1.63 to $88.90/bbl.
