FPL Energy LLC, the independent power production subsidiary ofFPL Group, Inc. said yesterday it expects to have a 500-megawattcombined cycle gas-fired power plant in Johnston, RI, up andrunning by 2002. Rights to build and operate the plant, which willbe located near Providence, were purchased from Reliant EnergyPower Generation, Inc., a subsidiary of Houston-based ReliantEnergy. The purchase price was not disclosed.

PG&E Begins CA Power Plant Construction
PG&E Corp.’s National Energy Group began construction on theLa Paloma Generating Plant, a 1,048 MW gas-fired, combined-cyclefacility expected to begin operating in the summer of 2001. Theplant is estimated to burn about 180,000 MMcf/d, and Kern-Mojave isthe closest pipeline source, a spokesman said.
Aquila, Calpine Partner on Missouri Power Plant
Aquila Energy sold to San Jose-based Calpine Corp. a 50%interest in its 600 MW gas-fired, combined-cycle Aries power plantnow under construction in Pleasant Hill, MO. Under the agreementMerchant Energy Partners, an Aquila subsidiary, will manage thefuel supply for the plant as well as all the power produced by theplant. Calpine will oversee construction, operation andmaintenance.

ANR said horsepower problems at its Grand Chenier (LA)Compressor Station, which are restricting combined capacity fromHIOS and near-shore West Cameron production to about 600 MMcf/d,should be repaired by Dec. 15. That will restore capacity to 750MMcf/d, ANR said.

Mild weather and a weak futures screen combined to drop cashprices early for the second straight trading session yesterday. Butunlike last Friday, there was no late rally in the futures screento spark an afternoon rebound. The Northeast and Midcontinentexperienced the most significant drops, with many points in the tworegions falling more than a dime. Some western points avoided thegeneral weakness, with PG&E climbing almost a dime and theSoCal Border and Opal rising a few cents.
