Multitude of Gulf Coast LNG Projects Prompts Transco Expansion Plans

With nearly 18 Bcf/d of new LNG import capacity approved for development along the Gulf Coasts of Texas and Louisiana and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, Transcontinental Gas PipeLine has drawn up plans for a mainline expansion project between compressor stations 45 and 85 in Louisiana. It also is planning to expand its system by about 700,000 Dth/d from Station 85 to a connection with affiliate Gulfstream Natural Gas along its Mobile Bay Lateral.

Calpine Subjected to Legal Buffeting on Both Coasts; Future Dim

What remains of national independent power plant operator Calpine Corp.’s sinking ship was battered on both coasts Monday, prompting a California-based business columnist familiar with the once-high-flying Silicon Valley-based company to write its business epitaph. Calpine had no immediate reaction to the latest turn of events in the company’s continuing financial struggles; a spokesperson reiterated that no bankruptcy filing had been made yet by the company.

Displaced MMS Reports 8.29 Bcf/d Shut in Off Gulf Coast

An estimated 8.29 Bcf/d of natural was reported to have been shut in when Hurricane Katrina roared across the production facilities off the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts late Sunday and early Monday, according to report issued by Interior Department’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) offices in Washington, DC and its temporary office in Houston.

Market Prices Drive Puget Sound Retail Rates Higher

Not enough hedging and abnormal weather on both coasts played a role in driving Bellevue, WA-based Puget Sound Energy (PSE) to announce Wednesday it was filing with state regulators for about a 17%, or almost $10 monthly, retail natural gas rate increase. Only 25% of the Puget’s supplies were locked in at fixed prices last year, a spokesperson said Thursday in an interview with NGI.
