Greenwood, SC Looking for Energy Provider

The Greenwood Commissioners of Public Works (CPW), the municipalorganization responsible for the energy needs for the city ofGreenwood, SC, said it has entered the market for a total energyprovider. The CPW is searching for companies with tangible assetsto provide comprehensive energy supply services, including powersupply and gas supply. Energy supply proposals may includealternatives ranging from full requirements service to thedevelopment of owned generating resources, the CPW said.

KCBT Still Shooting Blanks

The Kansas City Board of Trade (KCBT) had an estimated volumefor the first time this month yesterday, but the Board’s managementis not concerned about the overall lack of trading. The KCBT hasrecognized the problem and is in discussions with its customers onhow it can bring its trading floor more to life, a spokespersonsaid, but others openly wonder if there will be a gas pit at theKCBT much longer.

Chesapeake Energy Corp. of Oklahoma City, OK, fully exercised ona cash-less basis the common stock purchase warrant issued to itfrom Gothic Energy Corp. in March 1998 and had thereby acquired2,394,125 shares of Gothic common stock. Chesapeake now owns about13% of Gothic’s common stock. The warrant for 2,439,246 shares hadbeen issued to Chesapeake as part of a transaction involving theacquisition by Chesapeake of shares of Gothic’s senior redeemablepreferred stock, a 50% interest in Gothic’s Arkoma basin gas andoil properties and a 50% interest in substantially all of Gothic’sundeveloped acreage. The shares were issued pursuant to thecash-less exercise provisions of the warrant that permittedChesapeake to surrender the right to exercise the warrant inexchange for a number of shares (45,121) of Gothic common stock.

KCBT is ‘Concerned’ about Inactivity

Although no panic buttons have been pushed yet, the Kansas City Board of Trade (KCBT) is getting increasingly worried about the recent lack of activity on its gas futures contract. There has been no estimated volume since July 29, and as a result, open interest has been stuck at 669 positions.

Shareholders of St. Joseph Light & Power Co. of Missouriapproved a merger with UtiliCorp United Inc. of Kansas City. Of theshares voted, 93.6% were in favor of the merger, while only 2.1%voted against. The approval vote represents 68.5% of all St. Josephshares outstanding. St. Joseph Light & Power share owners willreceive $23 of UtiliCorp common stock for each share of theircommon stock at the deal’s completion. St. Joseph’s stock closed at$20.6875 and UtiliCorp’s stock closed at $24.8125 Tuesday. The$190.6 million deal to create Missouri’s fourth largest gasdistributor and third largest electricity distributor was announcedin early March (See Daily GPI March 8, 1999). The companies nowseek regulatory approval, including the completion of a marketpower study required by both the Missouri Public Service Commissionand FERC, which should be finished in about 60 days. Steinbeckersaid. Light & Power serves 66,000 electric and gas customers inall or part of 10 northwest Missouri counties. UtiliCorp has morethan three million customers in eight states and in Canada,Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

UtiliCorp United’s Aquila Energy signed a deal to supply gas tothe PowerSmith Generation facility near Oklahoma City, OK, Thecontract, which runs into 2004, is for 50 Bcf. “This is another ina series of long-term contracts that we’ve completed in the pastyear where we design unique energy risk migration arrangementsgiven specific independent power plant situations,” said Ed Mills,Aquila president.
