Piedmont said it is seeking asset management services, seasonal, and year-round supply for contract terms yet to be determined. The Charlotte, NC-based utility said it buys more than 240 Bcf/year and has firm transportation contracts on the systems of Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line, Columbia Gulf and Columbia Gas Transmission, Texas Eastern Transmission, Tennessee Gas Pipeline and Midwestern Gas Transmission. Charlotte, NC-based Piedmont Natural Gas (PNG) has completed the $57.5 million sale of half of its 30% interest in SouthStar Energy Services to AGL Resources, effective Jan. 1. PNG retains a 15% ownership and earnings interest in SouthStar, which is no longer subject to any purchase option in favor of AGL. The deal increases to 85% AGL’s ownership interest in Atlanta-based SouthStar, which provides natural gas, transportation and related services to more than 500,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers under the trade names Georgia Natural Gas, Piedmont Energy, Florida Natural Gas and Ohio Natural Gas.

Piedmont Eying Tri-State Rate Cut on Softer Gas Prices

Charlotte, NC-based Piedmont Natural Gas Co. filed for a reduction in its rates for customers in North Carolina and South Carolina. The filings with the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) and South Carolina’s Public Service Commission (PSC) seek to lower the wholesale cost of gas benchmark contained within rates in each state and follow recent declines in the wholesale cost of gas.

Piedmont Natural Gas Co. CEO Thomas E. Skains was elected to serve as chairman of the American Gas Association’s (AGA) board of directors for 2009. Skains joined Charlotte, NC-based Piedmont Natural Gas in 1995, became COO in 2002 and became CEO in 2003. He previously served as senior vice president of Transportation and Customer Services at Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corp. and was a corporate attorney in Houston. AGA’s other officers for 2009 will be: Robert C. Skaggs, Jr., CEO of NiSource Inc. (first vice chairman); John W. Somerhalder II, CEO of AGL Resources Inc. (second vice chairman); and David M. McClanahan, CEO of CenterPoint Energy (immediate past chairman).

Piedmont Plans New LNG Peak Shaving Facility in North Carolina

Piedmont Natural Gas plans to construct, own and operate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) peak storage facility in North Carolina, the company said Monday.
