New wells in the Marcellus Shale kept natural gas production there on the upswing in May, but declines in several other areas kept total U.S. production to 81.84 Bcf/d, just 0.3% higher than the 81.61 Bcf/d reported in May 2012, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The cash market was a “Tale of Two Cities” Tuesday as the bulk of locations meandered within a couple of pennies of Monday’s settlement, but the swooning Northeast suffered $1 plus declines as near-term weather was expected to moderate. Futures prices resorted to a mixed finish in light trading, and at the close April had risen 0.1 cent to $2.356 and May had dropped 1.0 cents to $2.462. April crude oil followed weak equity markets lower and tumbled $2.02 to $104.70/bbl.

Colorado Sets Fracking Chemical Rules as ‘Model’ for U.S.

Calling them a model for other states, the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) on Tuesday unanimously approved new rules for the disclosure of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing (fracking), including trade secret protections sought by the oil and gas industry. The Colorado Oil and Gas Association (COGA) said the state “now has the strongest hydraulic fracturing rule in the country,” and environmental groups praised the action.

CFTC, FERC to Remain Open if Government Shuts Down

In the event of a shutdown of the federal government at midnight EDT Friday, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) said the “vast bulk of the agency’s operations will cease.” It said it will have only 25 staff members overseeing the markets, which will allow the stock markets, commodities and futures exchanges to continue to operate.
